In a group chat, you can leave the chat yourself or remove someone else from the chat. Leaving removes you from the conversation. Removing someone removes them from the chat but keeps the message history.

Tip: If you’re leaving a group because you’re receiving too many notifications about new messages, you can instead turn off notifications or mute the chat from that group.

Leave a group chat

If you decide to leave a group chat in Teams, you'll stop receiving messages. You can rejoin only if someone invites you again.

  1. In the chat list, find the name of the group you want to leave.

  2. Select More options  More options button > Leave  Teams leave chat icon.

If you change your mind, just ask someone to re-invite you to the group.

Remove people from a group chat

Note: Your admin needs to turn on this setting to allow members to remove each other from a group chat.

When you remove people from a group chat in Teams, they can see past messages but can’t send new ones or see future content.

  1. Open any group chat of three or more people and select View and add participants  Add participants icon.

  2. Go to the person's name that you want to remove.

  3. Select Remove  Teams Remove attachment X icon and confirm you want to remove the participant from chat.

A message in the chat informs everyone that you've removed the person.

People removed from a chat can see the previous chat history, but they can't send new messages or react to messages. They also can't view new conversations or files shared by the group.

Note: If someone leaves or is removed from a group chat, their messages will remain in the group chat history. However, editing any message in a group chat makes that message invisible to former participants.
